Ideas for Project 1 (Lillian Gordon)

My concept for What the Future May Hold refers to the notion that in the future machines will have all of the jobs and humans will be paid a salary as a way to survive. The only humans who will truly have jobs are the mechanics who work on the machines and robots which drive our world. For my actual image I am thinking about having someone sitting on a couch at home, looking tired, skinny, unhealthy, and some sort of machine delivering medicine to this person because they have gotten to the point where they cannot take care of their self.

I would like to do something which represents the recent notion of creating children through science rather than naturally. For the actual project I am thinking of presenting babies in glass tubes almost like what you would see in a film where there is a science experiment taking place.

These ideas spark my interest because I feel as if they represent the dystopian future that will emerge once technology reaches its peak and humans will possibly be useless to society.

My inspiration for these ideas comes from the song "In the Year" and from Dax Shepherd's podcast Armchair Expert.

  1. Lillian, these are both strong ideas. What happens to economies, and the people within them, as labor becomes increasingly automated? Perhaps you could create an image that combines both utopian and dystopian predictions regarding this issue. While working conditions have improved over the centuries, many jobs are still very physically grueling, and yet people are unable to turn them down without access to education and other resources. In terms of "engineering" babies, this is certainly a fascinating topic. What sorts of traits do you imagine parents might "elect" for their offspring in an effort to improve their physical, social and economic success?
