Project One Idea

Ocean Acidification

·      Since industrial revolution, CO2 concentrations have increased due to burning of fossil fuels and land use change

·      Ocean absorbs 30% of carbon dioxide that is released into atmosphere

o  As atmospheric levels increase so do the levels in the ocean

·      A lot happens when CO2 is absorbed by seawater

o  Chain of chemical reactions

o  Higher level of hydrogen ions

o  Becomes more acidic and carbonate ions become less abundant

·      Carbonate ions

o  Building blocks of structures

§  Sea shells and coral

o  Less of these makes it harder for the building and maintaining of shells

§  Oysters, clams, sea urchins, shallow and deep corals, and calcareous plankton

o  Also affects fish

§  Ability to detect predators decreases in more acidic waters

·      Affecting the world’s oceans

o  Whole food chain may be at risk

o  Many places depend of fish and shellfish as primary source of protein

Project One Topics (EF)

 Project One Ideas:

1) The negative effects of fast fashion. Fast fashion is defined as cheap clothing that is made solely for the purpose of keeping up with fashion trends by mass-market retailers. This type of fashion has a large negative impact on the environment that I would like to shed light on.

2) Inclusion of 'invisible identities' (bisexuality, asexuality, etc.) Though we as a society still need to work on including people of all LGBT+ identities, there are a few that are less talked about than the others. I would like to bring make a piece that shows these identities and puts them in the spotlight for a bit.

Project one Idea(s)

 Okay so

1). I think about the environment daily. I feel like we’re doomed and not doing nearly enough about it. A lot of people still don’t even believe in climate change. This boggles my mind. Also, I know disposable things are very important right now but I do wonder how it will effect our environment. I work at a restaurant and I watch thousands of paper menus get thrown away weekly.

2). Politics. When do we change how we do things? Are we always going to be a democracy with a president? Should we outgrow this system and come up with something new? I think it’s important for us to know when and how to change things as years pass... I don’t have the answers I just think about this often and what it means for the future.

3). How my generation will be as adults (like real adults.. like middle aged). I feel like things are very different now then they were when our parents were younger and I often think about what our future looks like and how we will do things.

Mirror Mirror on the Wall, What's the Fairest Future of them All?

Alright, so I decided take the shotgun approach and just blast out a bunch of random stuff. First one is my current favorite topic, rest are in no particular order. 1. Today, mosquitoes exist. And if we do nothing, they will continue to exist. Lets take the first steps to erradicating them once and for all. 2. Cybernetic life forms (Cyborgs) 3. Space marines, imperium of man (to specify, lots of development in space in both private and public sectors, making space more accessible and in a sense pushes the boundaries beyond our continental land masses) 4. American Withdrawal 5. EU disintegration 6. Turtles -> Turtles leave their shells 7. Turtles -> Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 8. Globalization (cities becoming more cosmopolitan, arguably entire nations, as cultures diffuse and homogenize, could cultures with weaker influences dissipate. One thing that makes me curious would be the use of languages as an example) More may be added as time goes on

Project 1 Idea(s)

1) Ideals of beauty and plastic surgery, what if beauty can be determined like a formula? Whatever fits is right, whatever does not is wrong? What if plastic surgery became something so common that people can easily look like who they idolize?

2) Many everyday objects that we dispose of took decades and centuries to decompose like plastics. Metals, glass, styrofoam can be physically broken but they cannot decompose. What will the future look like when landfills composed of these objects expand? Also, a lot of African countries like Ghana, were treated like landfills for HDCs to dispose of their electronic wastes. If this situation was never resolved, what will it look like in the far future? The lifecycle of plastics © WWF-Aus / Stef Mercurio

Project One Idea-Maggie Green

What I plan to examine for my Project 1 is the future of the environment, not only in nature, but the people who will suffer the most, and alternatives to how we're living now that could lead to a greener future.

Project 1 Ideas (Samuel Battle)

I am planning on addressing the long-reaching effects of the systems put in place to combat the spread of COVID-19, particularly the emphasis on social distancing. There are two possible avenues I am interested in exploring.

The first would focus on the potential future of public spaces, including the use of technology to monitor people for any signs of illness (and encouraging others to be vigilant for the same). While I understand why they are employed, I feel like it has great potential for misuse. As an example, an article from Technology Review about the lockdown and its effects (my primary inspiration for choosing this topic), mentions that algorithms used by health insurers have been shown to favor white people and questions whether using similar technology for COVID-related purposes could end up discriminating against people with low incomes, among other factors. I absolutely do not want this project to come off as demonizing the thought of having any health-related restrictions at all, but I do wish to explore what corporations or the government could do with that technology and how it would impact a hypothetical future society.

The second avenue I am considering is more personal in scope. It would focus on the possible effects of social isolation on people's mental health. While some people still currently meet in person (with facial coverings, of course), most larger gatherings like class sessions, sporting events, and church meetings have shifted online in some form to limit the amount of people together at once. I aim to explore what would happen if this became the norm even after COVID-19 finally dies down - in particular, I am curious about what a generation that grew up without having known in-person communal gatherings would look like.

In conclusion, there are a number of factors to consider in both appraising the world's current situation and predicting how it could impact our collective future, which is why I think the topic would make for thematically complex artwork.

Project 1 Ideas (Emily Bahan)

My idea for project one is to focus on the future of pollution and the impact on the environment. I would like to somehow show various types of pollution all together (air, water, light, etc.). Another idea I had for this project is to focus on the future impacts of overconsumption. My idea for this is to show how we're draining all of Earth's natural resources and possibly include the expansion of large factories/companies. I also think that I could potentially combine this idea with the future of pollution.

One movie that has inspired this idea was the movie Wall-E. This movie showed a future in which pollution got so bad that the Earth was uninhabitable. This is close to what I was thinking about showing with trash piled up high and thick smog in the air, but my idea was to still have people living in it.

Project 1 Idea, by Denys Ladden

So far my goal for our first project is to attempt to explore the seclusion that future technology is progressing towards. I know this sounds quite on par with the current times. However, notice that I didn’t in particular mean social seclusion. I have a view that technology in fact facilitates our connectivity at an immense speed. Yet it also could be the exact opposite, electronics are submissive and people are in-fact the complete opposite of that. We can be comfortable behind our screens and still feel connected. We can indeed be lonely and happy as long as we are “connected”. That is a mammoth of a topic. So, rather, my goal will possibly be to explore the disconnection with nature and self, then people in particular. I think it is clear that the dystopian future although not predictable, will have a powerful effect on how we connect. Yet I think it will certainly have a huge impact on connection with the precise thing that makes us who we are.

Project 1 Idea (AJ Jones)

I want to look deeper into the modern development of VR technology and how it will be used in the future. This is extremely important in our current social climate amidst the pandemic and testing VR properly now while most places are in lockdown may lead to an interesting future. I actually have some images I made in a previous project to showcase this and I hope to delve deeper into this concept.

Children would be influenced by the use of VR and it can introduce an extra layer of creativity to the classroom. As someone who owns a VR headset, I have worked with 3D modeling purely in VR and it provides a mess-free art project for children. Just as the internet was introduced to classroom settings, I believe that VR will join within the next 15 years.

I was also looking into the world-building aspect, akin to Minecraft, as humans can create their own worlds without harming the real environment. Another popular example of world-building, albeit on a smaller scale, is Animal Crossing New Horizons.

However, just as promising VR can be, it can just as easily warp people's minds with the illusion of power over their digital reality as well as negligence of their true reality.

Link Research (WIP)

Idea for Project 1 (John Klapheke)

Idea 1:

The first idea I have for Project 1 is rather dystopian, focusing on how increasingly enslaved we have become to technology over the past decade.  The 2010s emphasized just how quickly technology companies can improve products to deliver powerful performance.  Yet with the dawn of the 2020s, much of society's care about "the newest phone with the best processor" has plateaued.  Society is content with the device in hand; our devices have become an extension of who we are.  Thus begins our age of ironic "disconnectivity."

What does this look life going forward?  The advent of readily available noise-cancelling earbuds and sophisticated notifications, combined with on-demand endless video choices doom us to an existence pervaded by distraction and impersonal interactions.  The simple action of conversing with one's neighbor is now referred to as "the art of good conversation."  Have we fallen so far down the path of impersonal interaction as a society where simply talking to someone earnestly is now considered a talent?

Composition:

One of the main image uses I foresee implemented in this project is a mass gathering of people completely enveloped in their devices (or "sucked into their devices" as you can see in the image below).  While cliché in subject material, I hope to make this project distinct in the settings I place individuals (a public park or on a bus).  I am also passionate about this issue as the more I have disconnected from superfluous usage on my smartphone and social media, the stronger my in-person friendships have become.

Plague Tunes

I don't know about you, but when I'm not walking amongst the infected, I spend my time tickling the ivories.

The Lance Oliphant Scoop

Lance Oliphant, Bellarmine undergrad majoring in music tech and jazz studies, minoring in computer science, and now in his third year has completely and utterly convinced me of his good charcter after one single interview. Yet, I know you need more than just words to realize the truth of my statement, so let me retell to you good folk what I have learned from him this week. Lance likes to play and write music, and really enjoys listening to rock music. His favorite movie is School of Rock, starring ofcourse the good man Jack Black. He likes to play the game Apples to Apples, wants to one day go to Galway, Ireland, and went to North Oldham High School. His pet peeve is people not treating other people how they would want to be treated. Yet, I think what was more interesting was what we have in common. We both love Indian food, his favorite dish being saag paneer. Lance lives in Louisville and he's a fellow comrade against the flesh eaters. This gentleman, with all the given information that has been uncovered, should be considered with high regard, for none can name another to be as Lance Oliphant is.

Ideas for Project 1 (Lillian Gordon)

My concept for What the Future May Hold refers to the notion that in the future machines will have all of the jobs and humans will be paid a salary as a way to survive. The only humans who will truly have jobs are the mechanics who work on the machines and robots which drive our world. For my actual image I am thinking about having someone sitting on a couch at home, looking tired, skinny, unhealthy, and some sort of machine delivering medicine to this person because they have gotten to the point where they cannot take care of their self.

OR

I would like to do something which represents the recent notion of creating children through science rather than naturally. For the actual project I am thinking of presenting babies in glass tubes almost like what you would see in a film where there is a science experiment taking place.

These ideas spark my interest because I feel as if they represent the dystopian future that will emerge once technology reaches its peak and humans will possibly be useless to society.

My inspiration for these ideas comes from the song "In the Year" and from Dax Shepherd's podcast Armchair Expert.

What I Love to Do By Anissa Devore

I love to draw other things and people that I love, preferably digitally! (My art instagram is @nissyjane... shameless plug).

Juno is one of my favorite movies and if I ever have a daughter I’m naming her after Juno somehow. Both Ellen Page and Micheal Cera are incredible.

All About Denys

Denys Ladden is a junior transfer student Computer Science major.  He enjoys doing a bit of everything, including art and music.  He is in fact pro-zombie.  His favorite food is empanadas and his favorite movie is Skyfall.

He and I have in common how we think the zombie apocalypse would possibly happen and it kind of looks about how the world is right now with corona so hopefully we are wrong.  We also are both interested in photography, but he has a Nikon (ew).  He doesn’t have any pets.  However, his pet peeve is ignorance which I totally agree that it can be really annoying. We both enjoy Sunergos coffee and his pirate name is Billy Bowlegs.  Also, fun fact: Denys is from Europe!

All about Samuel

Sam is an English Major who loves video games. We both love to draw. He prefers the city over the country. His dream job is to be an author. He hates when people are loud chewers. He is as introvert. His favorite music genre’s are new wave and rock. His dream vacation is Japan and South Korea because his grandmother is part South Korean. He loves Jurassic Park. He has no tattoos and no pets.

Get to Know Miranda Smith

Miranda is a senior at Bellarmine University as a Photography and DAT with Communication minor. Now that the formalities are out of the way, Miranda is a great photographer with an exquisite taste in coffee and film cameras. She enjoys the idea that her hobby is her major, ask her about it. At no point would she be timid to take on you on in any card game as that is something she does often. Growing up with many pets having many tattoos and enjoying crocheting she's the person to know.

What I love to Do by Emily Bahan

I love spending time playing and snuggling with my cats. I love all animals but right now I only have cats. This is Toby Kitty and he is full of energy, but he occasionally wears himself out and sits on my lap.

Interview with Elizabeth Fultz by Emily Bahan

Elizabeth is a junior and is a computer science major. Her hobbies include playing video games, baking, and reading. Some things we have in common are we both go to Bellarmine, both our names start with an e (sometimes people call her Emily when they first meet), we are both introverts, and Einsteins is our favorite place to eat on campus. Her birthday is January 18th and has one older brother. She's from Kentucky from a small city south of Louisville. Her favorite food is apples and her favorite band is Imagine Dragons. Her dream vacation would be going to the UK which is also where she would chose to live if she could live anywhere.

Elizabeth's Favorite Pastime

Ballet

One of my favorite pastimes is ballet! I've been dancing and doing gymnastics since I was little but only recently started taking ballet classes as an adult.

Miranda's Pasttime Activity

I learned to crochet when I was in middle school.  It i something I used to do with my friend on the hour long bus ride home that I had and since then, I have just enjoyed being able to make things.

Interview with AJ Jones

AJ Jones is a DAT and Comm double major Junior student at Bellarmine University. They like to make art, watch anime and play games in their free time.     A simple Mac n Cheese is their favorite meal and snack. Hidden Figure is their favorite movie, silver is their favorite color. Their favorite type of music is electronica. They told me that octopus their favorite animal. We are both not a fan of zombies as we believe that it's getting old and overdone. We both hated bugs and their favorite season is Winter, Christmas is their favorite holiday.

AJ is not an outgoing person but as an ambivert, they're willing to start and guide the conversation.  They prefer to stay in the comfort zone but they're willing to take risks. Their dream vacation is where they can mountain ski and have easy access to a lot of food.

What I Love To Do (Vicky Lin)

My new favorite pastime: watching over my baby nephew when he sleeps. Quiet time and a cute baby, what's not to love? He came only days before the lockdown, though he's a bit too rowdy and energetic for a baby only 5 months old,  you can't help but think he's the cutest thing when he's asleep~

So cute when you're not crying, but that won't last, how sad.

Vicky's Spirit Animal

My spirit animal is a rabbit. Idle when calm, quick when alert.

Cute and fluffy, cotton candy~

What I love to do (Dylan Mumford)

In my free time one of my main hobbies is working on vehicles, usually diesel trucks. Tinkering with anything that has a motor has always been an interest to me. I have worked on other people’s vehicles for free and sometimes I get paid. It is relaxing to me, until something does work and I have to figure out why. In the future I wouldn’t mind having my own diesel performance shop.

Interview with John Klapheke

John Klapheke is from Louisville, Kentucky. He double majors is design arts technology And communications.

John loves his filet mignon with a side of mashed potatoes and asparagus. In his free time he enjoys watching his favorite movie series, Indiana Jones. Although, it is a toss up between that and Star Wars. Classic rock is his desired music with AC/DC being one of his favorite bands. He was quick to announce that his pirate name would be Red Beard, due to him having a red beard. Johns biggest pet peeve, which I also agree with is chalk dust on his hands and technology not working. If he were to have the opportunity to go on his dream vacation he would enjoy a 2-3 week road trip visiting all of the major parks across the US. He currently works at the SuRf at Bellarmine but plans to attend law school and become a lawyer.

Dylan’s Spirit Animal

The shark is my spirit animal because they are fierce and brave. A shark puts fear aside and go’s after what they want.

One of my favorite pasttimes

I have been a pinball aficionado since I was twelve years old, after visiting an expansive arcade in my hometown of Austin, Texas. While I am certainly not devoted enough to purchase a pinball machine myself (a single one will almost invariably cost thousands of dollars), I occasionally make time to visit the various arcades in the area and play the machines they have available.

Samuel Battle playing pinball.
A picture of me playing pinball earlier this summer. The venue seen here takes great pains to follow local disease prevention guidelines, as the mask and gloves indicate.

Interview with Anissa Devore

Anissa Devore (whose first name is pronounced "uh-niss-uh") is a junior who plans to major in digital art and technology. In her spare time, she enjoys playing video games (citing the PC game Town of Salem as a favorite) and drawing, two hobbies we share in common. She also enjoys glam rock and scary movies like Hereditary. Her dream job is becoming an illustrator for the high-profile video game company Naughty Dog, while her dream vacation would be in Switzerland. On a more personal level, she describes herself as a city person (another trait we share) who can be introverted or extroverted depending on the people around her. Her biggest pet peeve is when people chew loudly around her. Finally, her only pet is a pitbull named Valkyrie.

What I Love to Do (John Klapheke)

John Klapheke at his "gaming desk" playing No Man's Sky

One hobby (in addition to photography, working out, kayaking, and hiking) I have enjoyed during this pandemic is playing video games.  A good way to relax and virtually catch up with friends via Discord, video games provide a common objective to work toward.  It is a sort of virtual hangout in which one can explore new worlds with friends, safe from COVID-19's harmful reach.

Interview with Emily Bahan

Emily is a senior DAT and Painting major from Southern Indiana. She has one brother and two sisters as well as two cats who she loves to hang out and play with. If she could live anywhere else in the world, she said she would have to go with Florida which makes sense considering she loves Summer and hates Winter. Her favorite food is steak, she likes to listen to Pop music, specifically Adele, she is an introvert, and her birthday is on May 3rd. When asked what her dream vacation would be, she said she would like to go to anywhere in Italy.

Interview with Vicky Lin

In the short time I had with Vicky Lin, a senior at Bellarmine University and a Louisvillian, I uncovered some interesting facts about her. Her academics cover a double major in Design, Art, and Technology paired with Painting. She even included a minor in Marketing.
While on campus, you will most likely spot her in the study space on the upper floors of the library. Traditional Chinese music may be heard from her headphones but that's only if you get very close.
When not studying, she enjoys creating art like painting and crafts.
When asked about her dream vacation, it wasn't what most would expect. She mostly fine with anywhere as long as it had four things: air conditioning, lots of food, wifi, and a charger outlet. The main distinction she did make though was that she prefers seeing and supporting the locale rather than the city.
When being around people, she tends to be more of an introvert and stay in her comfort zone. However, that doesn't stop her from eating noodles and being with fluffy white rabbits. Vicky was a wonderful interviewee during my time with her and I wouldn't mind learning more about her during our next encounter.

Interview with Dylan Mumford

Interview with Dylan Mumford

by John Klapheke

Dylan Mumford is a Bellarmine University liberal studies major with criminal justice minor.  Hailing from Taylorsville, Kentucky, Dylan spends time working on diesel trucks and with his pets (some 32 animals in total).

While he is uncertain of what a cool pirate name would be, Dylan has no hesitation in relaying one of his biggest pet peeves: people chewing loudly.  Perhaps he would not mind someone loudly eating barbecue, as it is his favorite food.

Dylan's media preferences include "The Waterboy" as his favorite movie, and classic rock/country music taking the cake for his musical tastes.  Additionally, Dylan would like to travel across the country via "overlanding," which requires an off-road vehicle that serves both as transportation and shelter.

Dylan currently works at his family's business and in the future wants to work for the Louisville Fire Department, keeping the community safe and fire-free.

My Free Time Hobbies - AJ Jones

One of the hobbies that I enjoy doing is playing games. I play a ton of video games but there is something special to me with the physical card and board games.  You can find me playing a long-term game Rummy 1000 with my family or a quick reflex game of ERS with friends. Some nights I'm found online play DnD, but my dice rolls are almost always bad.

What I Love To Do (Lillian Gordon)

I love to unwind by binge watching shows on Netflix after I have completed all my tasks for the day. If I am able to get to this point I am free of responsibilities and happy!

I am currently watching Arrested Development on Netflix

Interview with Maggie Green

During our class peer interview, I was able to meet Maggie Green one-on-one. She is a sophomore from Bardstown, Kentucky majoring in digital art. This is a very fitting major for Maggie because in her free time she enjoys drawing as well as writing. While we differ in artistic ability, we are similar in the fact we both have small dogs we love very much-Maggie owns a Maltese mix named Diggy-and we both like The Lord of the Rings films. Along with Diggy, Maggie also has two cats named T'Challa and Boo Boo. Maggie, as well as myself, is an introvert and her favorite place on campus is the Dining Hall. Maggie currently works at Comfy Cow but wants to be an animator in the future. Her favorite movie is How to Train Your Dragon and she was named after author Margaret Mitchell because Maggie was born exactly 100 years after her.

Interview with Lillian Gordon

 By Maggie Green

For my interview I talked to Lillian Gordon, who was named ‘Lillian Page’ because her mother liked the way it looked in cursive, and as a tribute to Jimmy Page, founder of Led Zeppelin .  Originally from Louisville, she’s a senior studying communications and DAT.  We share a few characteristics in that we love Mexican food, we’re both introverts, we both have small dogs (Lillian’s being a Yorkshire named Marley), we both love Lord of the Rings, and coincidentally both our mom’s favorite movies are Gone With The Wind. In her free time she prefers to go on walks with her dog and cook.  While it was hard to pinpoint on one, Lillian said her favorite movie was Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, her favorite place on campus is Centro and if she had to pick a dream vacation, it would be to New Zealand.   In the future, she hopes to be a movie editor.

Welcome

Welcome to Web Art!

Prompt Number One

 BLOG PROMPT ONE: Non-linear Narrative

My Boyfriend Came Back from the War (1996) by Olia Lialini and The Godlove Museum (1999-2006) by Entropy8Zuper!

PLEASE ANSWER BY POSTING COMMENTS.

Step all the way through My Boyfriend Came Back from the War (MBCBFTW) by Russian net art pioneer Olia Lialini and spend a few minutes exploring "The Godlove Museum" by the American-Belgian team Entropy8Zuper!.

NOTE: The Godlove Museum may not run well on contemporary browsers. That's okay - just look/play around to get a sense of the "experience" of the site.

What do you think MBCBFTW is about? How do these pieces challenge expectations about web design and linear narrative? Imagine how people might have felt seeing them at the time they were released in the very, very early years of the internet.

Prompt Number Two

BLOG PROMPT TWO: Appropriation and Collaboration

In B Flat (2011) by Darren Solomon and Thru-You (2009) by Kutiman

PLEASE ANSWER BY POSTING COMMENTS.

From A Dictionary of Modern and Contemporary Art, "Appropriation in art is the use of pre-existing objects or images ... To appropriate means to adopt, borrow, recycle or sample aspects of (or the entire form of) human-made visual culture."

Collaboration is when more than one person intentionally work together to create a work of art.

Interact with In B Flat and watch at least one song from Thru-You (I recommend "Mother of All Funk Chords"). Briefly describe these art projects in terms of appropriation and/or collaboration.

Prompt Number Three

BLOG PROMPT THREE:  Interactivity – Audience Participation

241543903 (2009) by David Horvitz and Glyphiti (2001) by Andy Deck

PLEASE ANSWER BY POSTING COMMENTS.

Both of these works rely on the participation of strangers. Please take some time to "draw" in Glyphiti and/or follow artist David Horvitz's instructions ...

Then watch the results. Google "241543903" to look at images from around the world, and watch one of the time-lapse videos of people making Glyphiti images. Discuss your experience.

241543903 by David Horvitz: no url, just google 24154903

Glyphiti by Andy Deck: http://artcontext.org/glyphiti/

In 2009, New York based conceptual artist David Horvitz posted daily 'instructions' to his tumblr account. Instructions as artwork have a history that can be traced back at least to Fluxxus artists of the 60's and 70's. Many conceptual artists involve the viewer in making art, embracing the role of chance in the ultimate outcome of the work.

Among other issues, New York media artist Andy Deck is concerned with interactivity and participation in opposition to passive consumption. Read his statement here: http://artcontext.net/glyphiti/docs/about.html

French net artist Christophe Bruno examines "network phenomena and globalization." Wifi-SM was created in 2003, so the design may feel dated. As explained by the artist, "You have the impression that the disasters of the world do not touch you anymore? You feel vaguely sorry for other people’s misfortunes but you don’t feel the inner urge which used to make you help your neighbor? WiFi-SM is the solution!"

Indirect Flights is a response to the impact of digital technologies on the representation of landscape. ...
